(Sample Chapter)
But, above the low rumble of the ferry’s diesel engine, and over the horrendous wailing, came a bizarre bellowing call as the moon and sky miraculously burned orange...
“What was that, Jasmin?” asked Joshua.
“Don’t know,” she said. “Definitely not Jost Fingle’s gang.”
Joshua nudged her and pointed. “See that?”
Ahead of the murderous assailants, and approaching from the northern hanging mist was a new shape. Patches of greyness moving in. At first glimpse it was just another swirl of moisture, but as they looked harder, the familiar spires of Stagrayler’s antlers came into vision. His full royal rack, bright eyes and majestical facial features were unmistakable.
Something clanked under the ferry. “Dheyn Joshureur!”
Joshua and Jasmin jumped backwards in shock and fell over each other. They were almost on their feet when the voice screamed again.
“Down Jasmin!” Eulosi burst out of the water, pirouetted over the guard rails, withdrew two hand-held crossbows from a large leather holster strapped to her waist and shot titanium bolts into the first steel drive cable. Joshua and Jasmin cowered against showers of sparks, but Eulosi’s bolts had only partly severed it. She took a full size crossbow from her back, aiming at point-blank range, pulling the trigger and falling back from the recoil. She’d caught it dead centre.
