CONISTON CRESCENT MOON

    (Sample Chapter)

     “Up, Joshua!” Lancer lifted me by the scruff of the neck and launched me forward. “Tell Hubbard the trapdoor will be open!”
    Jost Fingle, Qaid and Qallum were speeding down the mountain in their stolen Alvis Hagglunds, directly towards us. I hadn’t heard its roaring diesel and whining caterpillar tracks because of the Sentinel’s deafening steam engine. Plus, Hubbard’s earsplitting warnings had left my ears ringing.
    On reaching the Sentinel, I climbed up to the high cab, slamming the door shut behind me. Heat inside was unbearable, the glowing firebox and steaming boiler were inside the cab itself. Choking fumes from burning coal made me cough uncontrollably and it was several seconds before I opened my watering eyes... The sense of relief I’d hoped for didn’t materialise. I was instantly filled with a new horror. Industrial howls, clattering and constant hissing had shocked me, but tremors, vibrations and gusts of heat wafting in my face were nightmarish. I’d climbed inside a volcano on wheels.
    Hubbard was truly peculiar... Hair scorched and matted to his skull so tightly it looked as though his scalp had been coated with tar. Eyes protruded wildly, eyebrows and lashes burnt to a crisp. His crusty brown skin was covered in soot with flecks still smouldering on his oscillating cheeks. Incredibly, despite being sat behind his steering wheel, Hubbard was pedalling frantically on the spot, sitting astride a converted exercise bike which had been welded into the seat and footwell. He turned, staring at me, eyes like saucers, his smile revealing a pair of toothless gums in a gaping mouth that was drooling with exhaustion and excitement in his mobile furnace. {Please search 'Lakeland Fear' on Amazon}
