BIO
Alastair Graham Andrew Moffatt
(AGAM) is an author, photographer, graphic designer and digital artist. His work includes 'The Lakeland Spokes'
trilogy, and 32 graphic novels, all set in the English Lake District.
AGAM said, "Rippling rivers, burbling becks, sparkling streams and
white waterfalls are eclipsed only by the majesty of its towering peaks... I grew up here, and the magical power of solitude still fills me with everlasting faith."
"Gloriously green, mountainous and punctuated by cascading rapids... It is The Most Beautiful Place In The World. Exploring underground slate, lead, silver & graphite mines has been my passion since being a toddler.
For over five decades I walked the tunnels barefoot, paddled canoes across flooded caves and rode my motorbike through subterranean routes to emerge high up on the extremities of England’s tallest peaks.
My first close encounter with death came when I was trapped for three days in Cumbria's highest mountain. Once inside Helvellyn, I had pedalled my bicycle through the longest tunnel I could find. But on the third day, food &
water supplies depleted, I discovered a large steel trapdoor in the floor. Exhausted, thirsty and starving, I opened it and descended steps hewn out of the rock. Twenty minutes later, an angry voice screamed, "How did you get in here!?"
Turning instantly on the spot, I shone my torch towards the person who had startled me. But on stepping backwards, I stumbled and fell to the stone floor, hitting my head on a sharp rock.. Darkness engulfed me. Swirling grey matter of
fact flew into my brain. I was out for the count. Yet shortly afterwards, regaining consciousness, I found myself sitting beside a subterranean lagoon of crystal clear pale turquoise water.
—The man facing me appeared to be blind...
...Then I realised he'd rolled his eyes up so far back into his head that only the whites could be seen. But the lower rim of his left iris was just about visible, greenish,
flickering side to side non-stop... His right iris was totally concealed in the upper reaches of its
socket, but it slowly sank and the bright blue corona encircled a wide shiny black pupil. My heart skipped a beat.
He spoke to me in a deep slow voice, "I am dreaming in the left brain, yet listening in the right brain. Do you understand me?"
Nervously, I said, "Yes. I think so." Blinking repeatedly, I asked, "Are you actually awake?"
—"No. I am in a REM sleep snooze, into which you have intruded and our time is running out."

Q1 - WHY DO YOU WRITE? "Words are my reality. If I don't write, I don't breathe and exist. Writing is lifeblood. "
Q2 - WHEN DID YOU BEGIN WRITING? "I wrote poetry and short tales from the age of seven. My first full-length story was written when I was ten years old. But my best work is only now being created."
Q3 - WHICH BOOKS INFLUENCED YOU? "The Weirdstone Of Brisingamen by Alan Garner. Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake. The Parsifal Mosaic by Robert Ludlum. Stormbringer by Michael Moorcock. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson."
Q4 - WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE POEM? "The Listeners by Walter de la Mare."
Q5 - WHERE WAS YOUR MOST CHERISHED MEMORY FORMED? "Running through clean green bracken in the pouring rain, in the Lake District of England, UK."
Q6 - HOW DOES YOUR MIND WORK? "Kaleidoscopically, but with sparks of inspiration and seeds of a blooming fresh bunch of epiphanies."
Q7 - WHO IS YOUR ULTIMATE HERO? "My hero and mentor is my Father. To this day he demonstrates a strength of character, moral discipline and work ethic which are all beyond me. I am only the son of a pioneer, lucky enough to stand on the shoulders of an intellectual giant."
